PURPOSE
MQA: Officer Research: To conduct rigorous research on the skills landscape of the mining and minerals sector (MMS), generating actionable insights to inform and drive effective skills development initiatives with the MQA.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS: MQA: Officer Research
- Research Planning: Contribute to the development of the MQA’s annual research agenda, establishing relevant research methodologies, sampling techniques, and developing research instruments.
- Data Collection: Collection of both qualitative and quantitative data (e.g. conducting semi-structured interviews, focus groups, administering surveys etc.). This also includes desktop research/literature reviews.
- Data Management: Cleaning, weighting, processing, and analysing research data. Ensuring data accuracy, security, and compliance with relevant data analytic approach. Organising and maintaining research databases.

- Report Writing: Compile reports and updates on skills development research studies.
- Knowledge Dissemination: Develop and present research to internal and external stakeholders.
- Research Quality Assurance: Ensure research quality and implement quality control processes throughout the entire research process.
- Project Management: Manage research projects to ensure timely completion and quality deliverables in accordance with set timelines and allocated budget.
- Knowledge Management: Maintaining research outputs and staying up-to-date with skills development trends in the MMS.
- Research Administration: Maintain accurate research records, assist with financial tracking, coordinate meetings, seminars, workshops, conferences, and manage research resources.
KEY REQUIREMENTS: QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in a related field (preferably in Social Sciences, Economics or Statistics) at NQF level 7.
- A Postgraduate/ Honours Degree in a related field (preferably in Social Sciences) at NQF level 8 will be an added advantage.
Experience
- A minimum of 3 years of research experience (encompassing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies) gained in either the public or private sector, ideally in a comparable role or with a proven track record of conducting research or market research.
- Demonstrated proficiency in using both statistical analysis software (SPSS) and qualitative data analysis software (ATLAS.ti or NVivo), evidenced by examples of previous research projects or analyses utilizing these tools.
- Proven experience to produce and deliver clear, concise research reports and presentations tailored for diverse audiences.
- Proven track record of successful project management in research studies, both independently and collaboratively. (Please provide a list of previous research projects, highlighting your specific role and responsibilities in each).
Competencies: MQA: Officer Research
Knowledge required: Thorough understanding of the MMS and the skills development landscape. Understanding of the entire research process. Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and strategies or plans for skills development.
Skills required: Advanced computer skills (Ms Excel, Word, Teams, PPT), statistical and qualitative techniques, organisational skills including time management, communication verbal / non-verbal, problem-solving skills, ability to synthesise information and present in a simple accessible way.
Attributes required: People orientation, results-driven, perseverance /tenacity, attention to detail, delivery and deadline driven, willingness to learn and ability to work under pressure, integrity.
